ARC Review: Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead

I read Finlay Donovan is Killing It last year and really enjoyed it, so I was thrilled when I was approved for a Netgalley E-ARC of Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead! Two things before we get going here: you definitely need to read Finlay Donovan is Killing It before starting this one and FD #2 will be released on February 1st.

As always, the thoughts in all of my book reviews are my own. Thank you so much to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press (Minotaur Books) for the gifted E-ARC copy!

Title: Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead

Author: Elle Cosimano

My Rating:

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
a blue book cover with a animated women's face peeking over the top edge. Her hair is in a bun and she's wearing sunglasses. The title in big black and white letters say Finlay Donovan Knocks 'Em Dead.
Synopsis from Goodreads

Finlay Donovan is—once again—struggling to finish her next novel and keep her head above water as a single mother of two. On the bright side, she has her live-in nanny and confidant Vero to rely on, and the only dead body she’s dealt with lately is that of her daughter’s pet goldfish.

On the not-so-bright side, someone out there wants her ex-husband, Steven, out of the picture. Permanently. Whatever else Steven may be, he’s a good father, but saving him will send her down a rabbit hole of soccer moms disguised as hit-women, and a little bit more involvement with the Russian mob than she’d like.

Meanwhile, Vero’s keeping secrets, and Detective Nick Anthony seems determined to get back into her life. He may be a hot cop, but Finlay’s first priority is preventing her family from sleeping with the fishes… and if that means bending a few laws then so be it.

With her next book’s deadline looming and an ex-husband to keep alive, Finlay is quickly coming to the end of her rope. She can only hope there isn’t a noose at the end of it…

My Thoughts:

Name two things that don’t usually belong together but for some reason work really well together: murder mysteries and witty humor. And that’s exactly how I would describe Finlay Donovan. Reading the first FD book, I was so surprised at how much I was enjoying two completely different genres coming together. And I have to say, this second book was even more entertaining than the first!

I love a good murder mystery, as long as it’s fast-paced and exciting enough to keep me guessing. And combined with the crazy shenanigans Finlay and Vera get up to, it’s a delightfully entertaining read. There will be those who nitpick at the slightly unbelievable plot, but to me, that’s partly what made it so funny. Cosimano treads the line of believable versus unbelievable in a way that’s hilarious and exciting.

I really appreciated how Finlay’s character is written as a real person. She doesn’t have it all together and she makes stupid decisions. Finlay Donovan is a hot mess, but is the extremely relatable, genuine, and “untypical” heroine that we all should see more of!
